The Kaunergrat Mountain Range is the Nature Park’s backbone and gave it its name. It proudly towers above the deeply incised Pitztal Valley and Kaunertal Valley at its sides. It is home to unspoilt nature and an intact cultural landscape that has been shaped by the hard work of the region’s farmers over the centuries.

The Nature Park was founded by nine municipalities from Pitztal Valley Kaunertal Valley and Inntal Valley in 1998. In July 2003 the area around Kaunergrat Mountain Range was officially approved as Nature Park by the Tirolean provincial government.
The new Alpine Ibex Centre in St. Leonhard offers insights into the world of ibexes. In the outdoor enclosure you can have a close look at the majestic animals. The “Naturparkhaus” is a multimedia-based information centre about the natural park. It is located at the “Gachenblick” in the heart of the natural park.
Tips for excursions in the Natural Park
Both in summer and in winter the natural park Kaunergrat offers many beautiful destinations to discover.
The new Alpine Ibex Centre at St. Leonhard deals with the story of the ibex, the iconic heraldic animal of St. Leonhard. 65 years ago a new population of ibexes was resettled in the Pitzal Valley after they had been completely killed off. Now, one of the biggest populations of the Eastern Alps lives here. The Alpine Ibex Centre makes it possible to discover the world of ibexes. It offers an interactive exhibition on two levels, a café-restaurant with a terrace and an info area and shop. The highlight is an outdoor enclosure where you can observe marmots and ibexes (the feeding station is accessible for wheelchair users).

Quiet winter in the Nature Park Kaunergrat
In winter the natural park is a magical place. Dive into an untouched winter scenery and discover the snow. If you like be active, 12 km of cross-country trails (classic & skating) and several groomed winter hiking trails or snowshoeing paths wait for you.
